by Dana Goldberg

Public death records must be located often and for a multitude of purposes. They may be required as evidence in court hearings, insurance or by a person in search of their family tree. The public death records can found easily in every county and state.

Each state has a department which has the duty to record and store vital records such as death and birth records. Each state has different requirements that must be met in order to receive the death data. The department is usually located in the state\’s capital city. These records are also available at the county level. The county department which is responsible for the receiving of information about a person\’s death has various names in different states.

The local or state agency will often have a website which will contain access to part of the information contained on a death certificate. In an effort to stem the growth of identity theft or forgery of a document, the complete date of death and other information may be edited. The letter \’x\’ may replace several numbers in the date of death. The death certificate is not imaged on the website as other documents which may be found. In order to prove a copy to be true, a person will have to physically go to the government agency. The agency will put the seal of that agency on the copy. This will prove that the document is indeed true and can be used as evidence in a court of law.

There are other websites available online which state that a researcher can obtain public information from them about person including death information. These websites charge a fee for a person to search their records. A person in search of death records will have to determine if any possible information which may or may not be in their records is worth the fee that is charged.

Although not an official government recording agency, the public library can be a resource for documenting a date of death through other historical documents. Many libraries have a section set aside for genealogical research. Many of the reference resources in this section will contain information about a person such as death and are open to the public.

Records of the death of people are available to the public, but the key is in knowing where to look for them. There are a variety of sources open to viewing, but only the governmental agencies can certify death records.
