The names are extremely important in fiction. You want a name that is memorable and appropriate for the character. Sometimes the names come easily, but usually you have to work. There are several ways to find names. I'll share with you some that worked for me or others that I know. Whatever your method, there are some principles to keep in mind.

Names with Meaning

It is one of my favorite methods. Select a trait of your character and search in a dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedias, dictionaries language, or other resources with name meanings. For a Bard character I searched for names on Behind the Name dealing with songs and stories: Bard, songs, stories, talea … It came with "Satu" which means "fairy tale, fable" in Finnish. I loved the sound and meaning, so that's what I have named.

Language or culture

Another way of seeing the names is to keep all your characters in the same type of culture. You may have Japanese names, African names, german names … many possibilities. The fantasy culture does not resemble world culture, a leader in any way, except the naming system, but adds to the unity of creation. For example, a book Sara Douglass 'threshold is very like the Egyptian culture, and the names of his characters adequately. It has taken many names from the Bible and books on Egyptology.

Sons

Various sounds of the letters involve different types of characters. Harsh sounding names work well for a Sark-evil characters, Cain, Grax. More sweet to the ears of a good character Jaren, Harry, Rohan.

History, modern or Otherworldly

If you write a historical fantasy, you want to research what names were common in the time and place of your story. If it magic realism or takes place in the modern world, you have a scope much more. You can find almost any name in any part of the world, although different names are more frequent some places than others. Now, if your story is set in a universe different, no matter where it is not the Earth, you can make a name as you want. DO NOT make the unpronounceable. If some demon must have a name as Jktlomnps (or equally hideous to read), then please give a nickname that is more pleasing to the eye (like Jek) or otherwise for characters and readers to refer.

Tricks with Words

Here are three tips to create a whole new words that may trigger a character's name:

1. This is Writing.com jezzilin user. "Take common phrases and words very quickly and drop few letters. or … a bird in a tree … birdinatree … bidantre … Bidantre. Perfect for the place or character names.

2. Spelling words backwards. Take an ordinary word or a name and flip it around. You will find some combinations this terrible way, but there is a chance for gems. The name Canderyn, for example, is Nyrednac (Nac for short).

3. Keyboard mashing. This tends to be a last resort. Pound a few random keys, then try to understand the meaning. It takes creativity to turn al; sdiufaoei in Alsifa (eg real time).

A few things to remember:

* Make-readable names.

* You do not have too many similar names. If two imitation of characters names / resemble (and Jaren Jaiden) then your Reader May be confused. You do not have flashbacks or looking for clues to know which you speak.

* Keep some consistency. You do not K'latho'ras and Selena in the same region. If you have multiple kingdoms and countries / cultures in your world then give few guidelines for naming general.
