Why people unlock tmobile G1 or Apple iPhone, if not all functions can be used?

Why people unlock your T-Mobile G1 or Apple iPhone, if not all the features can be used? or you can use all the features? PPL are showing some iphone apple, so they can use on tmobile. wouldnt that be better than just getting the G1 and be able to use all its capabilities? and vice versa with the G1. his cousin is an entire "I have a phone cool "thing?
